Welcome to the Hive Gilbert School celebrates Homecoming Oct. 22-23

WINSTED — The Gilbert Yellowjackets have been gearing up for this weekend’s Homecoming games with several special events and Spirit Week this past week at school.

“We’ve been having a big exciting week to build up excitement for the Homecoming games, said Patrick Cooke, associate athletics director.

The four classes at Gilbert earn points by participating in the various Spirit Week activities. The points are tallied at the pep rally on Friday and a winning class is declared.

The week began with Monday’s theme of “Fashion Disaster. Tuesday was “Dress as Your Career Day, followed by “Class Colors Day on Wednesday. Thursday was “Class Country Day. Each class picked out a country and decorated a wall mural to be judged in the homecoming competition.

“The kids have a great time staying up at the school until about 10:30 p.m. putting their murals together, Cooke said. “Some of the countries selected this year were the U.S.A., China and France. The wall murals will also be judged as part of the total score as to which class wins the homecoming competition.

Spirit Week concludes today, Friday, Oct. 22, with “Blue and Gold Day and a pep rally after school.

“We’re going to have class competitions for tug of war, and there have been pie-eating contests, limbo contests and musical chairs during lunch periods throughout the week that also tally into which class wins the Homecoming competition, Cooke said.

The biggest Homecoming attraction is the Gilbert-Northwestern football game Saturday, Oct. 23, at 2:45 p.m. The Yellowjackets will take on Windsor Locks.

“We have a pretty good shot this year, Cooke said. “We’re 4-1 and Windsor Locks is 2-3. It’s going to be a great game.

During halftime, the Homecoming Court will be presented on the field.

“There is one couple from each class nominated to be on the Homecoming Court and then four couples from the senior class, Cooke said. The four senior class couples compete for Homecoming King and Queen. The winners will be announced at the Homecoming dance Saturday night.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
