Girvin & Ferlazzo was named as the legal advisor. Sickler, Torchia, Allen & Churchill was named as the independent auditor. Ray Preusser was named as the internal auditor. Hiscock & Barclay was named as the bond counsel. The Millerton News was named as the district’s official newspaper. The board also agreed on pay rates for short-term substitutes. These rates were decided by looking at the rates of similar schools in the area. The NECC/Webutuck gardenAt the end of the evening, the board made a temporary decision regarding the North East Community Center’s (NECC) proposal regarding the sale of produce grown in the garden located on the Webutuck campus.NECC runs an after-school/summer program with Webutuck students that teaches about agriculture, local farming, the science behind growing food, nutrition and the impact of nature such as worms or late frosts. By selling the produce grown in the garden, the students will also learn about the business practices, such as bookkeeping, that are required to run an agriculture business. The NECC proposed the creation of a small market to be held on Wednesdays on the grounds of the comunity center. The market would be held on Wednesdays to minimize competition with the Saturday Farmers Market, also held in Millerton. All funds raised by the students would be put into a separate account and used to refund the garden program during the next school year.Because of the time-sensitive nature of the decision due to the growing season, the BOE decided to grant NECC and the students permission to sell produce for two weeks. The issue will be raised again at the next BOE meeting held on Monday, July 18, so that the board members have more time to discuss the project.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
