A visit from the Clauses, music and a Parade of Lights

LAKEVILLE — A large crowd of merrymakers of all ages gathered at the Lakeville Hose Company’s new firehouse Sunday, Dec. 4, to greet Santa, Mrs. Claus and a bevy of elves. The area’s youngsters had conversations with the Jolly Old Elf, gathering their courage to plead their cases as having been good enough this past year to receive their hearts’ desires. After visiting with Santa, families had homemade cookies, hot chocolate and other refreshments in the open garage of the firehouse. They then joined the Salisbury Band Christmas Brass and Hot Chocolate Society and Lakeville’s Joanna Seaton and Donald Sosin to sing Christmas carols, holding candles and reading words from song sheets provided by the band. Children lined up along the stone wall adjacent to the firehouse, their candles flickering in the chilly early evening breeze as they sang along. Next came the lighting of the tree outside the firehouse. Following the caroling and tree lighting, a colorful and brilliant Parade of Lights made its way from Lakeville to Salisbury on Route 44. There were decorated vehicles of all kinds, from firetrucks to motorcycles to jeeps, lighting the route to the delight of all, but especially the children. The event was cosponsored by the Lakeville Hose Company, its auxiliary and the Tri-State Chamber.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
