Two Labor Day equestrian events

SALISBURY — Labor Day weekend, which signals the end of summer, always offers up a jam-packed schedule of sporting events —including some in the equestrian world.

In Lakeville, two horse facilities that are close enough to each other that they  can be visited by horseback (except for the traffic) hosted major events. Town Hill Farm’s Horse Trials took place on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 4 and 5, and Quarry Hill Farm, on Route 41 just before Route 112, held an Open House on Saturday.

At the Town Hill Farm Horse Trials, competitors had their pick of day for competition, with beginner novice, novice and training levels running both days.

Eventing is a competition that tests the skills of a horse-and-rider duo in three different phases:dressage, show-jumping and cross-country.

Sharyn Cataldo, Town Hill’s stable manager and the event organizer, said it went off without a hitch; more than 160 horses competed and the biggest wild card —the weather — was spectacular.

Quarry Hill’s Open House to showcase the farm’s Arabian breeding program entertained more than 225 spectators.

Lunch was followed by a tour of the facility and an exhibition in the indoor ring.

Rae Schwarz and her husband, Marshall, have been breeding the horses for eight years. They gave  a riding demonstration on their stallion, On The Mark, and then trainer Bill Bohl introduced the crowd to this season’s crop of foals, accompanied by their mares.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
