75 years ago — July 1936

SALISBURY — Miss Nellie Ball and Mrs. George Senior enjoyed a trip to Hartford last Sunday and visited the Rose gardens now in full bloom.

TACONIC — Herbert Scoville Jr. is enjoying the fishing in New Brunswick, and last week sent home a beautiful 30 pound salmon, a very substantial evidence of his skill as an angler.

LAKEVILLE — New seats have been placed in the Stuart Theatre. Latest type combination of springs and air, assuring great comfort to the patrons. Work has been started for the installation of a Western Electric Wide Range talking equipment. It is expected new equipment will be in operation by the end of next week.

SALISBURY — Alfred Smith is driving a new Ford.

ORE HILL — Mr. and Mrs. Reginald Wilhoite of Pine Plains have rented Mrs. Florence Butler’s cottage.

LAKEVILLE — Miss May Bissell’s residence is receiving a new coat of paint.

50 years ago — July 1961

Ownership of the North Canaan Water Company officially changed hands last Friday when Frederick B. Silliman, president of Bridgeport Hydraulic Company, handed Lawrence Eddy, president of the Canaan Company, a check for $79,992. The purchase price represents a payment of $33.33 a share for all outstanding stock of the North Canaan Water Company, which Bridgeport Hydraulic Company will now operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary.

KENT — The Otis Benson Davis family has just returned from a week’s stay at Bailey Island, Maine.

25 years ago — July 1986

Erik Winters and Reggie Lamson of Salisbury Central School were congratulated by U.S. Rep. Samuel Gejdenson for their class’ having won highest honors in the Elementary Education Poem and Poster contest sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The award was presented to Margaret Fraser’s first-grade class at a ceremony June 20 in Norwich.

Lorraine Patten, the first woman dentist in the Northwest Corner, hopes that her professional abilities will be welcomed in the Sharon area. Dr. Patten, originally from New York City, recently returned from practicing dentistry in New Mexico, where she felt less than welcome. “They’re not ready for women,” she commented. Other dentists would not speak to her, she said.

NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins St. passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

Bob was born Feb. 5, 1955 in Torrington, the son of the late Joesph and Elizabeth Pallone.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
