Town meeting was on money matters

FALLS VILLAGE — The selectmen agreed on four agenda items for a town meeting (which will probably be called for early December) during their regular monthly meeting Monday, Nov. 14.The call for the town meeting will include: two appropriations — of up to $10,900 and up to $28,300 — for the highway department and the assessor’s office, respectively. The appropriations requests received a thumbs up from the Board of Finance at their meeting immediately before the selectmen’s meeting (see story this page). Also on the agenda will be an easement on town-owned property next to the Falls Village Children’s Theater at 103 Main St., and a new contract with the Connecticut Resource Recovery Authority for the transfer station.First Selectman Pat Mechare reported receiving notification that the Small Town Economic Assistance Program grants for the Falls Village Volunteer Fire Department and the Children’s Theater had been extended, as requested, to Dec. 31, 2013, and June 30, 2013, respectively.Mechare also reported that the town water system has sufficient pressure now to install a new fire hydrant on Route 7 between Hamilton Books and Beebe Hill Road. And the selectmen took note of a request to close Page Road for a few hours for a block party in August 2012.Mechare also asked the board to approve a change in the town’s policy on days off for employees — that any day off without pay must be approved by a supervisor, and employees must use sick time first. The selectmen (Chuck Lewis and new member Greg Marlowe) agreed.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
