Town to host ‘Reinventing Your Business’ conference

WINSTED — The “Reinventing Your Business” conference, organized by the town’s Economic Development Commission, will be held at The Gilbert School on Friday, Feb. 17, starting at 8 a.m.According to Mayor Maryann Welcome, who also serves on the commission, details of the conference itself are still being ironed out.“The conference will be for existing business owners who are trying to improve and upgrade their businesses, and people who might want to start a business in town,” Welcome said. “The theme is reinventing businesses. We’re going to have seminars on introducing business owners to social networking, including lessons on creating Facebook pages for a business and how to join the business social networking website LinkedIn.”Welcome said there will be other workshops offered, as well as a keynote speaker, who has yet to be named.“We hope business owners come to socialize with other owners in the area and network,” Welcome said. “It’s still all in the preliminary stages.”Welcome added that the conference will be the first in a series of business conferences that will be held throughout the year.She said further details of the conference will be announced soon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
