Three arrested in Pine Plains car break-ins

PINE PLAINS — Three men have been arrested and charged with participation in a series of car break-ins during the early morning of Wednesday, July 16.

According to a press release written by Lt. John Watterson of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, the three men allegedly stole many personal items totaling in the thousands of dollars from different vehicles all over town.

Cale Cornell, 17, and Matthew Moore, 24, both from Pine Plains, were charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree, which is a Class E felony, and conspiracy in the fifth degree, which is a Class A misdemeanor. Both were arraigned at the town of Pine Plains Court.

Cornell was remanded to Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond. Moore was remanded in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

Watterson wrote that the third man involved in the crime is an 18-year-old from Pine Plains whose name will not be released by the department because he is charged with a misdemeanor and is eligible for youthful offender status.

Cornell is under investigation for kicking out one of the rear windows to a Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle while he was in custody.

According to Watterson, all three men are also under investigation for an incident on Tuesday, July 15, when a 1,000-gallon propane tank was damaged by a vehicle in the late night hours.

Several fire departments responded to the incident and some fire fighters sustained minor injuries dealing with the damaged tank and leaking propane.

Investigations into the incidents are continuing.

Anyone with information on the crimes or anyone who believes they were victimized by these crimes should call the Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau at 845-486-3800.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
