Seventh-graders flaunt their geography knowledge

AMENIA — The Lions Club has some major fundraising plans this month.

The first is the annual 300 Club Dinner Dance, which will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Immaculate Conception Church. Tickets are $60 each and good for two people.

All money raised will support the Lions Club Scholarship Fund, which helps local students with scholarships for college.

More than $8,400 of total prize money will be awarded to 65 winners during the dinner dance, which is one of the Lions Club’s major annual fundraisers.

"It’s a fun night of dinner and dancing, and it goes toward a great cause," said Linda Gregory. "Plus it’s great to see everyone around the holiday time."

Also gearing up this month is the Lions Club Memory Tree, which is another annual fundraiser.

Tickets are $5 per bulb, and each bulb is dedicated in memory of a loved one.

The tree, located in the Four Brothers Pizza Inn’s parking lot, is lit starting at the beginning of December and will stay on for the remainder of the month. The restaurant donates all the electricity to run the lights.

The names of all dedications will be printed in The Millerton News on Dec. 18.

All money and forms should be turned in by Dec. 11 at the following drop-off locations: Jack’s Auto Service, Havens Real Estate, Bank of Millbrook, Cascade Spirit Shoppe, Melissa’s Hair Magic and Barnes Insurance. They will also be on sale at the 300 Club Dinner Dance.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
