Selectmen table land decisions

WINSTED — The full Board of Selectmen met at their regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at Town Hall. However, because Town Manager Dale Martin, Town Attorney Kevin Nelligan and Water and Sewer Commission Chairman Richard Nalette were not in attendance, the selectmen voted to table decisions on three land related issues until their next meeting.Mayor Maryann Welcome said Martin was away at a seminar and could not attend. She said Nalette had planned to be in attendance, but he was unable to attend the meeting. Welcome did not address why Nelligan was absent. The first item tabled was a previously discussed request for an easement for Peter and Jan Cohn who own property at 812 West Wakefield Blvd. The property owners are seeking the easement in order to reconstruct a retaining wall and parking area on town-owned land adjacent to their property. On Jan. 9, the Planning and Zoning Commission voted to approve their request for an easement. In his action request letter to selectmen, Town Manager Martin recommended that the selectmen schedule a special town meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 21, so the town can vote on the easement request. However, at the selectmen’s meeting, questions were raised concerning taxes owed on the property.Selectman Candy Perez said Peter and Jan Cohn owed more than $4,000 in property taxes to the town.Perez said she did know if the property taxes were issued by the town this month or if they were taxes previously owed to the town.Mayor Welcome said she did not know and could not give Perez an answer because Martin was not present at the meeting. The selectmen voted to table any decision on the easement until the next meeting. The Democrats on the board — Mayor Welcome and Selectmen Perez, George Closson, Michael Renzullo and James Divita — all voted to table the item.Republican Selectmen Ken Fracasso and Glenn Albanesius voted against tabling the decision. The second land-related issue tabled at the meeting was the proposed sale of town-owned property on Roosevelt Trail, located next to property at 401 East Wakefield Blvd., owned by Anthony Potamitis and Alberta Turbert.Attorney Patsy Renzullo, who represents the two property owners, sent a letter to Martin on Jan. 6 asking for permission to purchase the property. Patsy Renzullo is the father of Selectman Michael Renzullo. The final land-related issue tabled at the meeting was the acceptance of state-owned land abutting Crystal Lake Dam.All three issues are expected to be discussed at the next selectmen’s meeting on Monday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
