Selectmen discuss volunteers, road race, appointments, grant

SHARON — The Board of Selectmen met Wednesday, March 14 (a day later than usual), and disposed of some routine matters:

• Ducky Bancroft, Janet Williams and Joyce Sciepura were re-appointed to the Transfer Station Advisory Committee.

• The selectmen approved the annual request from Sharon Day Care for use of the Town Green and certain roadways for the Road Race, scheduled for May 5.

• Tom Alden, new captain of the amubulance squad, was appointed to the local Emergency Protection Committee.

• First Selectman Malcolm Brown signed off on an application from the Sewer and Water Commission for a grant to help defray the costs of a sewer system upgrade.

• Brown reported that the town has 20 bids out for an outside company to do the scheduled revaluation of taxable property in town. He mentioned that the town of Goshen recently accepted a bid of $70 per parcel; Sharon has roughly 2,500 parcels.

• He also said he has been attending interviews with officials and contractors in Amenia, N.Y., as that town gets closer to the beginning of the remediation of the old Amenia landfill. Sharon’s interest is considerable, as the town will be responsible for testing and maintenance for 30 years.

• Monday morning Brown was knee-deep in papers pertaining to the budget. That process is well along, he said. The budget goes to the Board of Finance next week and then to a public hearing.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
