Sarah Jane (Davis) Wortman

HARWINTON — Sarah Jane (Davis) Wortman, 77, died Aug. 23, 2011, at Laurel Hill Nursing Home in Winsted. She was the widow of Lowell K. Wortman Sr. They were married for 55 years.She was born on April 14, 1934, the daughter of the late Frances (Sherwood) and Elmore Davis of Bakerville, Conn. Sarah loved to travel, especially to Maine. She enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including cooking, playing canasta, knitting, tatting and ceramics.Sarah is survived by her four children, Lowell Wortman Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Harwinton, David Wortman and his wife, Sharon, of Litchfield, William Wortman and his wife, Janet, of Harwinton and Sandra (Wortman) Lang and her husband, Neil, of Winsted; a sister, Margaret Martel of Torrington; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Edward Davis and Chester Davis; and her sister, Virginia (Davis) Wilson.The family would like to thank the staff of Laurel Hill Healthcare for the care she received during her 11 years there.There are no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.The Cook Funeral Home in Torrington has charge of the arrangements.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
