FALLS VILLAGE — Ruth Elinor Schreiber, the first person born in North Canaan in 1941 on 5 Jan., to the late Gladys and Henry Schreiber, their second child, entered into eternal rest 31 Dec. 2011. Ruth is survived by her husband, Alan S. Church of Falls Village; her six children, Deborah Hotchkiss and her husband, Raymond, Sandra Gaudet and her husband, Jean, Susan Dickinson and her husband, Edward, Lisa Fallon and her husband, James, Cheryl Stearns and her husband, Daniel, John Barnett Jr. and his wife, Jeri; her sister, Shirley Keip of Washington, Conn.; her brother, George Schreiber of Cornwall; her grandchildren, Tabitha Hotchkiss, Brandon Monnier, Ryan Monnier, Breanna Fallon and Noah Fallon; and great-grandchildren, Kayden Monnier, Jennifer Monnier, Elliot Monnier; Howard Monnier, the father of two of her granchildren; and her nieces and nephews, Mary Hendrix, Shirley Nickerson, David Schreiber and Natasha Cutler.Ruth and her husband enjoyed life at their home in Falls Village, traveling, bible study and being with family and friends. Family was very important to Ruth. She especially enjoyed being reunited with her cousins Walter and Donald Schreiber after being apart for many years. Ruth always remembered friends and family members at Christmas and on their birthdays, sending out many cards. This was her way of always staying in touch.For many years Ruth directed the choir and was the organist at the North Canaan Methodist Church as well as other local churches. She had many associations in the church music world. Ruth was a skilled seamstress, crafting many animal toys, clothes for children and adults, as well as drapes and curtains for her’s and her family’s homes.She was a superb problem solver, as her life’s lessons had enabled her to meet any challenge with a positive attitude and a smile. Ruth was ready with an encouraging word wherever one was needed. Ruth was such a joy to be with, always upbeat, ready with a laugh, always fair and unfailingly loyal. During her illness, Ruth had the support of family near and far; there was always someone with her. During her last five months, her stepson, Jim Woolley kept her company and aided her through the long nights. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the many medical caregivers throughout her illness. And a very special thank you to everyone’s thoughts and prayers. A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held Thursday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. in the Sharon Methodist Church. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
