P&Z discusses town planning

KENT — The Planning & Zoning Commission (P&Z) is holding a series of special meetings to review and make final changes to a proposed Town Plan of Conservation and Development. The state requires all towns to update their town plan every 10 years. It is supposed to reflect the vision of town residents of how they want their town to look in the coming decade, and it forms the basis for the town’s planning and zoning regulations. At a special P&Z meeting on Oct. 20, commission members discussed what they felt were the three main objectives of the proposed plan: maintaining the natural rural character of Kent; community development; and community assets. One of the topics discussed was whether to include a section on “What makes Kent special?” as an integral part of the plan. There was also discussion about whether to include a planning overview in the proposed document contrasting “New England Kent,” “rural Kent” and “modern Kent.” One commission member said, “The typical New England village is an iconic American image.”Another special P&Z meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 27, at Town Hall at 5:30 p.m.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
