Kathryn ‘Kay’ Garzetta

Kathryn ‘Kay’ Garzetta

MILLERTON — Kathryn “Kay” Garzetta, 100, a 20-year resident and formerly of Staten Island, passed away Jan. 30, 2021, at Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., following a brief illness.

She was a resident of The Pines in Poughkeepsie.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Felice and Marie (Funicili) DeFelice. She was the last of 13 siblings.

Kathryn was married to Salvatore Garzetta on April 20, 1946. They shared a loving marriage for 64 years. Sal passed away in 2010.

Relocating to Staten Island after her marriage, Kay was a homemaker, and then worked for the former R&Z Television Company, and later for Dr. Neu and Dr. Boyd Legate, O.D., in New Dorp on Staten Island.  During that time, she raised three boys, Gary, Robert and Joseph.

Always one to stay busy, Kathryn was active in bowling leagues early in her life and later with her employment and her sons’ varied interests through the years. She was a life member of the American Legion Dalessio Post, 1310 in Staten Island and Millerton Post 178.

Her culinary talent was known and appreciated by all who came to her home.  No one ever left hungry.

In her retirement years, Kathryn and Salvatore wintered in Naples, Fla., keeping company with their siblings.  It was a joy to see them all together and always remarkably busy.

She volunteered at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Staten Island, Naples Community Hospital in Florida and St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie. She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, dancing and spending time with her loving family. Her kind spirit and loving ways will be deeply missed by all.

Kay is survived by her three children, Gary Garzetta and his wife, Angela, Robert Garzetta and his wife, Lisa, and Joseph Garzetta and his wife, Evelyn; six grandchildren, Gary, Sarah, Dana, Anthony, Inez and Eric; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Kathryn was predeceased by her siblings, Andrew, Antoinette, Clara, Rose, Dominick, Alfred, Carmela, Anne, Joseph, Felice, John and Anthony.

A special thank you to the PCU staff at Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital; their care and concern is a quality the family appreciated during a difficult time. Also thank you to The Pines, Poughkeepsie, for their compassionate care of our Mother over the last five years.

We consider it an honor to have a centenarian Mother. A Mass will be offered at a later date.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Scott D. Conklin Funeral Home in Millerton.

Memorial donations may be made to The Pines, 100 Franklin St., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
