Donald J. Reid Sr.

SALISBURY — Donald J. Reid Sr., 89, of East Main Street died May 11, 2020, at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He was the husband of Leona E. Reid. Mr. and Mrs. Reid were married for 65 years. 

Donald was born July 7, 1930. He was the last surviving child, born at home, in Taconic. He was the son of the late Hazel (Cutting) and William Reid Jr. 

He worked as a painter for many years with Ted Drumm Painting of Sharon. 

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1948 to 1952. 

During the early 1970s, Donald was a member of the Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance Squad. He nurtured a love of firefighting by being a more than 50-year active member of the Lakeville Hose Company. He also was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #6851 Couch Pipa in North Canaan. 

He enjoyed playing golf and fishing, but his true passion was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

In addition to his wife, Donald is survived by his two sons and their wives, Donald Reid and his wife, Linda, of Lakeville and Darin Reid and his wife, Kaki, of Salisbury; three grandchildren, Chrissy, Tami and Jamie; and six great-grandchildren, Cody, Austen, Kiera, Tanner, Jacoby and Meadow.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to either Troop B Police Cadets Post 1903, ATTN: Trooper Lance Carlson, 463 Ashley Falls Road, North Canaan, CT 06018; or to The Little Guild of St. Francis, 285 Sharon Goshen Turnpike, West Cornwall, CT 06796; or to the Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance Squad, P.O. BOX 582 Salisbury, CT 06068.

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.
