Region One voters OK budget

FALLS VILLAGE — The Region One budget passed a Tuesday, May 7 referendum vote easily, by a total of 274 yes to 63 no votes in the six Region One towns.
The 2024-25 Region One budget calls for a total of $17,690,331, an increase of $658,003 (3.86%).
All six towns voted in favor of the spending plan.
By town:
Canaan/Falls Village’s assessment is up to $1,417,263, an increase of $14,684 (1.05%). Voters approved the budget 32 yes, 6 no votes.
Cornwall’s assessment rose to $1,417,263, an increase of $177,768 (9.62%). Voters approved the budget 39 yes, 10 no.
Kent’s assessment is up to $2,526,911, an increase of $232,735 (10.14%). Kent passed the budget 59 yes, 15 no.
North Canaan’s assessment went down to $5,558,304, a decrease of $144,579 (-2.54%). Voters approved the budget 39 yes, 20 no.
Salisbury’s assessment went up to $4,408,013, an increase of $231,901 (5.55%). Salisbury passed the budget 81 yes, 5 no.
Sharon’s assessment is up to $1,754,954, an increase of $145,492 (9.04%). Voters approved the budget 24 yes, 7 no.

NORTH CANAAN — Master mason Karl Munson has been hard at work this spring to repair the Doughboy Statue and war memorial in the heart of North Canaan.
At a May 6 meeting of the Board of Selectman, Brian Ohler announced the restoration will be completed in time for Memorial Day.
"The stars aligned with that," said Ohler.
North Canaan's parade on May 27 will culminate with a ceremony at the statue. The unveiling of the statue will include a newly added name to the World War II memorial: Louis A. Cecchinato Sr.
"That was a name that was unfortunately missed when they first created that plaque," said Ohler. "I know the family will be thrilled to see that unveiling on Memorial Day."

The Art Bar, the new cocktail lounge located on the second floor of Great Falls Brewery in North Canaan, unveiled a splashy series of paintings on its walls on Friday, May 3. Artist Andrea Sanchez is a Connecticut native with ancestral roots in the Caribbean Sea. With ties to Puerto Rico through both of her parents, Sanchez’s acrylic on canvas works draw inspiration from the island’s scenery and wildlife, and possibly from Puerto Rican artists like Raul Ortiz Bonilla, whose bold-colored scenes of nature are housed in the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture. The opening event for the Bang Family Concert Series at The Smithfield Church on Saturday, May 4, celebrated the festive Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo, with a performance by the popular husband-and-wife guitar duo, Judy Handler and Mark Levesque. Their program titled “Fiesta!” featured Spanish and Latin-American music performed on guitar and mandolin.
