Not bad last week, but sorry, Giants fans

Last week, 8-5, for the season, 52-25; Pick of the Week 1-1, 5-1 for the season.

I apologize to all Giants fans for making them my Pick of the Week, because when I pick them it’s like the kiss of death, but I also had a second Pick of the Week come in with the Patriots victory. Going 8-5 isn’t a bad week but it’s nothing to write home about. The Colts’ collapse, along with the Giants poor performance, hurt, as did the big road win by the Raiders over Houston but I was especially happy the Bills’ win over the Eagles.

There’s no shortage of good games this week so let’s get on with it. Good luck with your picks!

Sunday, Oct. 16

Carolina at Atlanta – The Panthers continue to play tough against all comers but I can’t see the Falcons losing two in a row at home. I’ll stick with Atlanta, 30-24.

San Francisco at Detroit – A great matchup between two teams off to a great start. The 49ers continue to surprise under HC Jim Harbaugh while the Lions have established themselves as a legitimate playoff contender. I will stick with the Lions for now, 27-20.

Indianapolis at Cincinnati – The Colts are still searching for a win while the Bengals have surprised many with a 3-2 start. Neither team figures in the long run but for now I’ll go with the Bengals, 20-17.

Philadelphia at Washington – As for the Eagles, so far it has been a Bad Dream Team! I don’t see them winning this week against a very tough Redskin defense. I’ll stick with Washington, 23-19.

St. Louis at Green Bay – The Packers are due for a letdown but it won’t be enough to cost them a win. I like Green Bay to come alive in the second half to win this one, 33-23.

Jacksonville at Pittsburgh – The Jags are in a deep hole that will only get deeper after this week. Pittsburgh is banged up but Big Ben will find a way to win. I like the Steelers, 27-20.

Buffalo at New York Giants – If there is any chance of the Giants winning this week, I’ll have to pick the Bills, which is OK because I just can’t justify picking the Giants. Their defense is shaky and their offense is only adequate on a good day. I’ll take the Bills, 24-23.

Cleveland at Oakland – The Raiders are coming off a huge win on the road against a good Houston team and I look for them to win this week in their first home game since losing their owner, Al Davis. The Browns will be tough but the Raiders win this one, 30-24.

Houston at Baltimore – The Texans are coming off a tough loss at home and now must go on the road to face a well-rested Raven team. It may take some time for the Ravens to get going but in the end they come out on top, 27-24.

New Orleans at Tampa Bay – The Bucs got crushed by the 49ers yet they always seem to play New Orleans tough at home. I smell an upset in this one but I’m sticking with the Saints, 33-27.

Dallas at New England – This is a key game for the Cowboys, especially is the Skins get by the Eagles this week. I can’t see the Patriots losing this game at home so I’m sticking with them, 34-23.

Minnesota at Chicago – I look for the Bears to rebound after tough loss in Detroit. The Vikings are coming off their first win of the year but they’ll have to wait for their second. I like the Bears, 24-17.

Monday, Oct. 17

Miami at New York Jets – Watch out, Jet fans. This game is not a gimme. The Dolphins are winless and that scares me, however, the Jets need to right the ship with a win and I think they will. I’ll stick with New York in this one, 20-17.

Sam Lamott

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
