North East Election Results 2011

These results are unofficial until certified by the Dutchess County Board of Elections.Incumbent for town supervisor, Dave Sherman, who ran on the Democratic and Republican lines, was knocked out by newcomer John Merwin, who ran on the North East United line.Merwin received 439 votes, roughly 54 percent of the overall votes. Sherman received 374 votes.Five people were running for the two open council seats.Republican George Kaye received 428 votes, roughly 27.9 percent of the overall vote, and Democrat Ralph Fedele secured 326 votes, or 21.3 percent of the overall vote.Kaye and Fedele beat out Jon Arnason, 320 votes, David McGhee, 257 votes, and Charles “Chip” Barrett, 201 votes.Nancy Davis-Vialpando, a Democrat on the Independence line, received 524 votes in the unopposed race for town clerk.John Crodelle ran unopposed on the Republican and Democratic lines for town justice, pulling in 640 votes.


Passing the torch in town governmentHARLEM VALLEY — The Nov. 8 elections may be done with, but for those who won the many races throughout the Harlem Valley they won’t be able to take office until after the new year.Newly elected officials get sworn into office during organizational meetings in New York, held after the first of the year. Municipalities decide when they will hold those organizational meetings, typically setting the date at their monthly meetings in December. Town and village boards usually aim to set those meetings as close to Jan. 1 as possible, and announce the “reorg meeting” date through legal notices in their local papers. Tuning up two passions under one roof

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
