NORTH CANAAN — Ted Marolda heard the news on the radio as he rode to work in his old Ford. It was Dec. 7, 1941. The Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor, the radio announcer said.

NCES plants tree for Arbor Day

NORTH CANAAN — Students at North Canaan Elementary School (NCES) added a northern catalpa to the school’s arboretum on April 28 in honor of Arbor Day. For the 33rd year, NCES celebrated the annual tradition before a crowd of relatives and loved ones.

Art pop-up

The crowd was hungry for art,  hors d’oeuvres and Great Falls Brewing Co. beer on Friday, April 28 at the Canaan Union Depot in North Canaan, where local artists’ work was on display for sale to benefit Douglas Library.

Big Eats At The Bistro

As we come to the end of Railroad Street and start on Main Street, on the corner of the Canfield Building is the Blackberry River Bistro. If you haven’t been to North Canaan in a while and find yourself saying “That name sounds oddly familiar,” that’s because it is.

A Vision in Ink

Up about 100 feet on the right side of Railroad Street we come across Nerdy Visions. Opened in 2020 in the heat of the pandemic Nerdy Visions is a very proud new member of the North Canaan community. Nerdy Visions is a new twist on a tattoo parlor. Owner Joe Murph lends his “Vision” to help people envision themselves with new tattoos.

Coffee Roasting, Smoothie Mixing

A short distance away from Northwest Auto, across Railroad Street, we come across the newest business in town, ILSE Coffee. ILSE is a company that has been based in Stamford, Conn. Originally, they were primarily wholesale coffee roasters that shipped beans to cafes around the world.

Where To Go On The Go

Starting on Route 7 South and coming into North Canaan you’ll encounter Picante’s, Crane’s Power Equipment, and the Caddie Shack. As we cross the train tracks and pass the first few buildings of North Canaan we come across Northwest Auto on the left. A large garage directly on the side of the road I’d say impossible to miss.
