Doors are now open at the YMCA at Geer

NORTH CANAAN — Lisa Douyard is like a very sunny, upbeat drill sargeant. In her job as fitness and aquatic director (and, essentially, manager) of the YMCA on the campus of Geer Village, this means that she gets her clients to work out harder than they thought they could (or wanted to). It’s hard to say no to her.

Downtown North Canaan becomes shopping hub

NORTH CANAAN — An autumn chill signaled the end of the growing season last week — but village center shops in North Canaan boldly signaled that, as far as they’re concerned, the time to grow starts now.

Crafts on an autumn day at VFW

NORTH CANAAN — The Couch Pipa VFW Auxiliary hosted a crafters fair at Couch Pipa VFW in North Canaan on Saturday, Sept. 26. 

With music, food, 23 vendors, children running around and excellent weather, it was almost like normal life.

With generators, maintenance and caution are key

NORTH CANAAN — In a one-two punch, Tropical Storm Isaias’ arrival in early August, on the heels of four confirmed tornadoes in the Northwest Corner, wreaked havoc on thousands of homes and businesses by knocking out power and plunging the region into darkness for nearly a week.

YMCA at Geer slowly comes back to life

NORTH CANAAN — Slow and sure has been the motto of the Northwest Connecticut YMCA in North Canaan at Geer Village, which closed March 16 for the COVID-19 quarantine.
