Park & Rec programs for all ages are offered this spring

KENT — Lesly Ferris, director of Kent Park and Recreation (P&R), announced a very busy spring schedule, with activities and lessons for town residents of all ages. BaseballLittle League Minors baseball for youngsters ages 9 to 12 (as of April 30) includes play against other Little League Minors teams from Region One towns and nearby New York state.Second- and third-grade baseball players can sign up for the Farm Team program, which will also play teams from the same towns as the Little League Minors. In the Farm Team program it is the coaches, rather than the players, who pitch.There will also be a program for kindergartners and first-graders to introduce them to what baseball is all about and to develop basic skills.Dates for the season and for registration will be announced. Exercise for adults On Fridays from April 13 to May 18, Park and Rec will sponsor Flex Appeal, an exercise program for seniors designed to increase strength, balance and flexibility.The free classes will be from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. at the Kent Senior Center on Swifts Lane. Classes will be conducted by a licensed physical therapist from the New Milford VNA. The VNA recommends participants obtain their physician’s approval before beginning this light-to-moderate exercise program. The regular Monday Senior Luncheon program on April 2 will feature Easter egg coloring. The egg coloring will begin at 11:30 a.m., lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. Registration is required by calling 860-927-3403 or 860-927-1003. There is a $3 suggested donation. Healthy meals for seniors Park & Rec is a cooperating sponsor in New Milford Hospital’s Senior Suppers through the hospital’s Plow-to-Plate program. The cost is $5 per person and includes a choice of soup or salad; choice of one of two entrees; two side dishes; dessert and coffee/tea. On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
