Housatonic student of the week

The Lakeville Journal congratulates the honorees of the student of the week program at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. FALLS VILLAGE — A common theme among our students of the week has been the proliferation of Renaissance men and women. Rarely are these students parochial in their interests; they study the arts and sciences with equal passion. The danger, of course, is that such students never explore any one area deeply. That is not the case, however, with senior Rebekah Purdy.Rebekah was nominated by her Vet Science 3 teacher, Karen Davenport. The truth is that Mrs. Davenport is really more of a guide and mentor than a teacher to Rebekah in this advanced course, where they collaborate to develop materials, work with younger students and coordinate guest lecturers. After placing eighth out of approximately 50 contestants in last year’s UConn Vet Tech Competition, Rebekah sees this experience as the next phase of her education in Animal Science. As a budding writer, Rebekah works in the fantasy genre, but true to form, she does more than just dabble. She has written a number of short stories, including a novella that she is in the process of polishing in her creative writing class. Her works feature a cast of characters and entire worlds of her own creation.Rebekah’s experience as an actress has been just as profound. She has starred in a number of productions at Salisbury School, and in highly demanding roles from Mayella Ewell in “To Kill a Mockingbird” to Linda Loman in “Death of a Salesman.”It is fitting that Rebekah should be called upon to play such a wide range of characters, as her versatility and talent continue to amaze us at HVRHS.
