Sharon Center budget up, but total education spending is down

SHARON — The second draft of the proposed 2012-13 education budget was presented at a Board of Education (BOE) meeting on March 12. The proposed BOE budget is $3,947,442, a 7.07 percent increase over the current year. Sharon’s share of the Region One School District budget is $2,462,397, a 9.95 percent decrease from the current year. The combined total of $6,409,839 for the two budgets represents a 0.17 percent decrease from the 2011-12 school year. Each Region One town’s high school tuition to Housatonic Valley Regional High School (HVRHS) is based on the number of students from the town as a percentage of the total high school enrollment, in October. From October 2010 to October 2011, Sharon’s student population decreased from 20.2783 percent to 17.0259 percent. For regional pupil services, Sharon’s percentage of total elementary students in the region increased from 10.8971 percent to 10.9518 percent. These two factors taken together account for Sharon’s 9.95 percent decrease in payments to Region One.Sharon Center Principal Karen Manning said in the 2012-13 school year Sharon Center School’s (SCS) estimated enrollment will decrease from this year’s 191 students to 186.The proposed budget shows an average annual teacher salary of $65,746.A motion was made and passed to present the proposed budget to the Board of Finance.Other businessManning said because there have been six weather/snow days in the 2011-12 school year, Thursday, June 14 will be the last day of school. The eighth-grade commencement exercises will be held sometime between June 4 and 8.She also said, “We are working on going green, minimizing the number of paper notices sent home. We are looking at the Salisbury Central School model where they put all their notices on their website on a weekly basis. Our plan will be to post all notices for the upcoming week on our website by noon every Friday; if we have to do anything midweek, we will send out an email. If families do not have Internet access, they can let us know and we will continue to send notices home with their students.” As previously reported, SCS is planning on installing a new sidewalk on the property running from the front school entrance to Hilltop Road for safety reasons. Manning said, “We are waiting on an estimate from an engineer for the new sidewalk. We did get one estimate for $17,000 but we didn’t have an engineering report to give the contractor proper specifications. After we receive the engineering report we will ask for other construction estimates.”

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
