Webutuck baseball teams gear up for spring season

WEBUTUCK — The Webutuck modified, junior varsity and varsity baseball teams are gearing up for the spring 2012 season.During a recent practice JV Coach Kevin Kleespies said he was really happy with the way his team was shaping up.“We have a lot of kids coming back this year and a lot have moved up to varsity. So we’re a little short this year but it will give a lot of the guys who didn’t play as much last year more time on the field this year,” he said.Due to recent cuts in New York state aid many schools in the area had talked of cutting JV teams. As budget workshops are taking place across the state, more and more schools are opting to keep their JV teams, allowing there to be enough teams to play against one another in the Mid-Hudson Athletic League (MHAL).“We won’t know until the season starts exactly how many teams we’ll have, but right now we have a lot of games scheduled, so it’s looking to be a good, challenging season,” he said. The first JV game is scheduled for April 9, at home against Spackenkill and varsity’s first game will be on March 29, away, against Dover. The modified team is also shaping up to be strong force this year.Modified Coach Tim McEnroe said he is excited about the players who have signed up.“This is a good group. They are very talented and this is only modified. There’s a lot of potential on this field,” he said.McEnroe said he’s looking forward to some really good games this year.“I’m expecting a great season by what I’ve seen so far. The boys are working hard and have a lot of skills. It’s going to be a team to watch,” he said.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
