Library Gala 2012

COPAKE — The weather outside may — or may not — be frightful, but a committee of volunteers is already thinking spring and making plans for Gala 2012, the popular annual fundraiser for the Roeliff Jansen Community Library.Gala Committee Co-chairs Cathy Oates, Pat Pollok and Laurie Shnayerson announced that Saturday, June 2, will be the date of the Gala, and that it will take place, as it did last year, at Camp Pontiac in West Copake. “Everyone who attended was so impressed with the venue that we saw no reason to change,” said Pollok. “The Etra family has again graciously offered us their great theater and adjacent rooms.”Oates said that “the theme of Gala 2012 is based on the great Cole Porter hit song, ‘It’s De-lovely,’ only we took the liberty of changing it just a bit to fit our purposes, and came up with ‘It’s delightful, it’s delicious, it’s de-Library!’ ”Oates said that the gala, which will run from 5:30 to 8 p.m., “will feature delicious food from area chefs and restaurants, a silent auction, a live auction with guest auctioneer Louis Caropreso, and a delightful musical revue produced by Carl Ritchie, artistic director of Taconic Stage. Anyone who saw Carl in Noel Coward’s Private Lives, or his hilarious show, ‘The REAL (Desperate) Housewives of Columbia County Musical!’ knows they are in for a real treat.”The Gala Committee also announced that Maureen Rogers, long-time proprietor of Rogers’ Book Barn in Hillsdale and member of the library’s Board of Trustees, would be the Gala’s 2012 honoree.“It seemed very appropriate for the Library to honor Maureen,” said Shnayerson, “since the Book Barn is a ‘must visit’ venue for local book lovers as well as those from all over the East Coast. The gala will be an opportunity for all of her friends and patrons to sing her praises.” In addition, the Gala Committee has engaged the Mike Schiffer Trio to play during the cocktail hour from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The popular pianist and band leader is well-known to audiences at venues throughout Columbia County and the Berkshires.Additional members of the Gala 2012 Committee include Shirley Bresler; Marilyn Burch; John Cady; Heather Canetto; Karla Chrzanowski; Lynne Colclough; Ann Marie Farrell; Tonya Frickey; Marilyn Goldman; Beth Gordon; David Graefe; Barbara Greenberg; Wolf Jakubowski; Rita Levitt Jakubowski; Jennifer Jamieson; Cheryl Jones; Dona Kahn; Maj Kalfus; Sharon Luchow; Mary Ann Mailman; Hannah Mandel; Shelly Matthews; Mary Orazem; Morris Ordover; Sonia Pilcer; Pat Placona; Jack Pollock; Maggie Quadagno; Anita Salberg; Jill Sims-Elster; Elliot Sobel; Maureen Steiner; Howard Van Lenten; Betty Walsh and Meg Wormley. The Roeliff Jansen Community Library, which is chartered to serve Ancram, Copake and Hillsdale, is located at 9091 Route 22, approximately one mile south of the light at the intersection of routes 22 and 23. The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
