Town approves sale of interest in building

WINSTED — During a very swift special town meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 21, residents approved the sale of the town’s interest in a property on 121 Alpha Ave.The meeting, which lasted six minutes, approved the sale of the town’s 48.6 percent interest in the property to resident Jason Morneau.Because of the 17-2 vote, the town can now sell the fractional interest in the property, including $50,000 in back taxes, for $1.At the meeting, resident Jen Perga asked the selectmen how they arrived at the $1 asking price.“It’s a pretty dilapidated structure, and it was the opinion of Town Attorney Kevin Nelligan and the town to sell it for that price,” Town Manager Dale Martin told Perga. “Morneau intends to tear down the dangerous structure and rebuild on the property.”Martin said the town put the property up for bids last year and received no bids for it until Morneau’s offer.According to the town assessor’s property database, the property was previously owned by June and Anderson Farnham. The building on the property itself was built in 1950.The current appraised value of the property is $42,000, while the current assessed value of the property is $29,400.
