Mayor mum on public comment
WINSTED — Will Mayor Maryann Welcome reinstitute two public comment periods at Board of Selectmen’s meetings? That question was asked, but not answered, at the Board of Selectmen’s meeting at Town Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 21.During former Mayor Candy Perez’s term in office, selectmen’s meetings had two public comment periods — one at the beginning and one at the end after the selectmen completed their business.Since Welcome was voted into office in November, she has only allowed one public comment period toward the beginning of the meeting.During Monday’s meeting, resident Michael DeClement took the mayor to task for the change.“I am a little saddened by this,” DeClement said during the public comment period. “I would rather have two public comment periods instead of one. If someone is going to sit through an entire meeting, I would prefer they would have an opportunity to answer and to give their responses to town business at the end of the meeting. This is all about transparency and getting things out. I hope you will consider having a public comment period at the beginning of the meeting and the end of the meeting.”Welcome did not respond to DeClement’s request. When interviewed after the meeting, Welcome said that she would consider DeClement’s request. “I will have to think about it,” Welcome said.
