Ice out (already) declared Feb. 3

LAKEVILLE — Don Mayland, official arbiter of ice for Lake Wononscopomuc, declared “ice out” on Feb. 3.“This has to be the shortest ice cover in the recorded history of the lake, just 17 days!,” wrote Mayland in an email. The ice was declared “in” on Jan. 18. Ice in means the lake has completely frozen over; ice out is when the ice cover has broken. Mayland did hedge his bet.“Nothing says it won’t go back on, but with the lengthening days and the sun getting warmer, I really doubt we will see full cover again. But, who knows!”
