John E. Blakeley

RED HOOK — John E. Blakeley, 60, passed away Jan. 10, 2012, at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck surrounded by family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 26, 1951, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late Eleanor and John F. Blakeley. John worked for the Hudson River Psychiatric Center in Poughkeepsie as a painter. For more than 20 years he was the service manager for Ruge’s Subaru in Rhinebeck. He enjoyed his career and thought of his coworkers as part of his extended family.He was a graduate of Red Hook High School. John enjoyed many activities including hunting, fishing, gardening and playing with his grandchildren. He also was an avid NASCAR Fan.He proudly served his country with the United States Navy. He married Deborah Marie Doyle on March 10, 1973, in Pine Plains. She predeceased him on April 7, 2006. John is survived by his daughter, Sara, and her husband, Christopher Dundon, of Elizaville, N.Y.; his son, Cody J. Blakeley of Red Hook; two grandchildren, Caleb and Sophie Dundon; his father- and mother-in-law, Cecil and Gloria Doyle of Pine Plains; his sister-in-law, Brenda, and her husband, Peter White; his aunt-in-law, Barbara Wesley of Red Hook; and many nieces, nephews and close friends. In addition to his wife and parents, John was predeceased by his sister, Ann Kadletz. Funeral services were held Jan. 13 from the Peck & Peck Funeral Home in Pine Plains.Burial followed in the Evergreen Cemetery Pine Plains. The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
