NCES eyes energy efficiencies

NORTH CANAAN — Plans for further energy efficiency upgrades at North Canaan Elementary School are moving forward. The Board of Finance voted Jan. 11 to take the plan to a town meeting to seek approval for about $310,000 to replace the building’s older windows and some doors. It is now up to the Board of Selectmen to schedule the meeting.Principal Rosemary Keilty announced the approval to the school board Jan. 12. She said the project will go a long way toward a trend of energy savings at the school. A new heating system installed a couple of years ago and other installations, such as insulated window shades, have accounted for remarkable savings in heating costs. Some doors will have to be replaced — ones that include windows above and alongside the door as a single unit. While board members were already solidly behind the plan, the need was confirmed when those seated near one of the drafty units needed to put their coats back on.Digital thermostats will be replaced using budgeted school funds. Keilty said she is working with CL&P, which may pay for a substantial portion of that cost.
