Vandals caught after spree

SALISBURY — Five people were arrested Jan. 30 after admitting involvement in the vandalism of 24 street signs and about 19 mailboxes in the Twin Lakes area.Mailboxes on Taconic and other roads were damaged and street sign poles pulled out of the ground during the overnight hours. Some residents told police they saw a suspicious vehicle in the area the night before.At about 9:10 a.m., the vehicle and the suspects were located. They admitted their involvement and told police about 15 damaged mailboxes for which no complaints had yet been filed.Dominic Alfano, 19, Patrick Austin, 18, Nathan Katz, 19, and Conor Shugrue, 18, all of Torrington, and Adam Naehrig, 18, of Harwinton were each charged with first-degree criminal mischief and third-degree larceny. Bond was set at $5,000 each. They are to appear in Bantam Superior Court Jan. 9.
