NORTH CANAAN — Richard Howes, 64, passed away on Dec. 7, 2011. He was born Jan. 18, 1947, in Framingham Center, Mass., the son of Bettina and the late Richard Howes and the brother of the late Nancy Jane Howes. In addition to his mother he is survived by his niece, Tarah Howes Rowse, who is currently living in Burlington, Vt. At age 11, he had open heart surgery at Children’s Hospital in Boston, allowing him to enjoy many years. Rick spent his early years in Old Greenwich, Conn., and then moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1963, and to Sharon in 1973. From 1961 to 1966 he attended Maplebrook School in Amenia.Since attending Maplebrook, he volunteered in schools and camps for handicapped children and in hospitals, as he had earlier in Cincinnati. He also enjoyed working in the Sharon Pharmacy, which he did for many years. From 1992 to 2003, he worked at Maplebrook School where he was a student and continued to attend alumni events through this year.While living in Cincinnati and in Sharon, Rick was score keeper for the Little League and was a helper coach for the pee wee football team. He greatly enjoyed watching sports and reading books, especially about history. All who knew Rick will remember fondly his incredible memory, his love of history, his love of sports and his good humor and special jokes. A memorial celebration of his life was held at Geer Village in North Canaan on Dec. 14. Memorial contributions may be made to Maplebrook School or to Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
