Connecticut State Police Troop B

The following information was provided by the Connecticut State Police at Troop B. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Evading driver

An unknown driver left the scene after hitting an unoccupied vehicle parked on Millerton Road in Salisbury. The 2001 Daewoo Nubira sustained damage to the driver’s side rear tail light. Owner Samantha Williamson told police she parked the car in front of her home at about 3:30 p.m. Dec. 4. She discovered the damage at about 8:45 a.m. Dec. 5.

Car hits guardrail

Sarah Vallera, 57, of Winsted was driving west on Route 44 in Salisbury Dec. 5. At about 7:41 a.m., she lost control on a curve near the Between the Lakes Road intersection. The 1995 Mercury Marquis hit a guardrail. It sustained minor front-end damage. Vallera was not injured. She was given a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Three-car accident

William Holcomb, 63, of Falls Village attempted to drive across Route 63 onto Barnes Road in Falls Village at about 5:25 p.m. Dec. 7. His 2000 Lincoln Continental hit a 1994 Buick Regal driven north on Route 63 by Kevin Titus, 55, of Falls Village.

After the impact, Holcomb’s car went out of control. It hit a 2005 Toyota Rav4 stopped at the Barnes Road stop sign and driven by Graham Higgins, 32, of Falls Village. All three vehicles sustained front-end damage. Higgins was taken to Sharon Hospital for evaluation. He was later released with no apparent injuries. Holcomb was charged with failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign.

Breach of peace

Two people were arrested Dec. 9 after a 7:07 p.m. report of a disturbance in the Stop & Shop parking lot on Route 44 in North Canaan. Alexander Jacopino, 20, of North Canaan and a 17-year-old female were both charged with breach of peace. Bond was set at $500 each. They were to appear in Bantam Superior Court Dec. 12.

Black ice causes accident

Kelley Smith-Hull, 27, of Sharon was driving north on East Street in Sharon Dec. 10. At about 7:49 a.m., she lost control on a curve covered in black ice. The 2006 Toyota Corolla skidded off the road. It hit a utility pole. The car sustained extensive front-end damage. Smith-Hull was not injured. No enforcement was taken.

DUI

Sarah Lovallo, 27, of North Canaan was stopped by police on Route 7 in North Canaan Dec. 12 after troopers responded to a report of an erratic driver. An investigation revealed the vehicle had been in an accident prior to Lovallo being stopped. She was charged with driving under the influence and failure to maintain the proper lane. Bond was set at $500. She is to appear in Bantam Superior Court Jan. 3.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
