Switching things up with two Picks of the Week: Steelers, Lions

Last week’s record, 13-3; for the season, 126-66. Pick of the Week, 1-0; for the season, 11-2.

I must admit, I’m on a bit of a roll. This makes three consecutive weeks with double-digit wins (11-3, 12-4 and now 13-3) but I won’t crow too much. After all, the week before my hot streak started I had the worst week of my career, 6-10. To celebrate my roll, I’m going to give you two Picks of the Week.

I said last week that if the Giants beat the Packers there should be an investigation. After watching the game, however, I still believe that, but the subject of the investigation should be why the Giants don’t play like that every week.

With just four weeks left in the regular season there are still plenty of teams that remain alive for a spot in the playoffs. I hope your favorite is one of them. Enough said, let’s get to it.

Thursday, Dec. 8

Cleveland at Pittsburgh — The Browns continue to flounder while the Steelers continue to roll. Only San Francisco next week poses any real problem for Pittsburgh as the Steelers pursue home field advantage in the playoffs. The Steelers are my first Pick of the Week, 28-17.

Sunday, Dec. 11

Tampa Bay at Jacksonville — The Jags are going nowhere while the Bucs still have a slim chance at the playoffs. With that said I’ll take the Bucs, 19-16.

New England at Washington — The Patriots will give up some points, but in the end Brady and company have too much firepower. I’ll stick with the Pats in this one, 30-17.

Houston at Cincinnati — It seems to me that the bubble has burst for the Bengals while the Texans, even with a rookie quarterback, continue to win. Defense wins in the NFL and Houston has a formidable one. Texans wins, 20-17.

Kansas City at New York Jets — The Chiefs will play tough but the Jets have too much at stake in this game. A loss by the Jets would really hurt their playoff chances. Jets win, 24-20.

Minnesota at Detroit — The Vikings are not very good. The Lions, on the other hand, are still very much alive in the playoff hunt and cannot afford a loss. I’ll make the Lions my second Pick of the Week, 27-13.

New Orleans at Tennessee — This is an excellent matchup. The Saints are rolling and the Titans continue to play hard. In the end, however, Drew Brees and company have too much firepower. The Saints win this one, 33-20.

Philadelphia at Miami — It appears Michael Vick will be back for the Eagles, but as far as I’m concerned the Dolphins are one of the hottest teams in the league, if not the hottest. I like the Dolphins in this one, 24-23.

Oakland at Green Bay — The Raiders must rebound from their loss to Miami, but this will not be the week. The Packers are just too tough, and they’ll win this one, 27-17.

Indianapolis at Baltimore — As much as I would like to pick against the Ravens, I can’t. The Ravens win, 28-10.

Atlanta at Carolina — This is a huge test for Cam Newton. The Falcons come to town in search of a much-needed win to stay in the thick of the playoff race. On the other hand, the Panthers will play tough and score their fair share of points. Who wins? I like the Panthers in an upset, 30-27.

Chicago at Denver — This is absolutely a must-win game for the Bears. On the other hand, the Broncos are very much alive in the division race, and they have this kid Tebow playing quarterback for them. I’ll go with the kid and the rest of the Broncos, 20-16.

San Francisco at Arizona — Beware of this game. The 49ers are tough, but the Cards play tough at home (just ask Dallas). The Niners need the win if they want to be the top seed and get home field advantage through the playoffs. That should be enough. The 49ers win, 24-19.

Buffalo at San Diego — The Bills are headed down while the Chargers just might be heading up. It’s a stretch, but San Diego is still alive in the playoff hunt, and therefore I like the Chargers to win this one, 27-23.

New York Giants at Dallas — If last week is any indication, the Cowboys aren’t as good as advertised, while the Giants are better. Either way, if I want the Giants to have a chance, I’ll have to go with the Cowboys, 27-24.

Monday, Dec. 12

St. Louis at Seattle — What was the NFL thinking when it scheduled this game? For the record, the Seahawks are still alive, barely, for a playoff spot, so I’ll stick with them in this one, 23-13.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
