WINSTED — Recent correspondence from a Laurel City native who is serving in Afghanistan includes photographs of work being done in the war-torn country, along with images of Afghan natives and views of the country’s rocky terrain.Maj. Aaron Angell of the U.S. Marines, who has been in regular contact with The Winsted Journal since he was deployed to Afghanistan two months ago, said troops are heavily focused on counterterrorism, peacekeeping and infrastructure improvements in the country, which has been in a state of conflict since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.Angell is stationed at Camp Leatherneck in the Helmland Province of Afghanistan and said his job has included significant challenges that have required long hours of planning. The photos and descriptions on this page offer a glimpse into what many regard as a completely different world.
