Restaurant will reopen 16 months after fire

PINE PLAINS — The grand reopening of Lia’s Mountain View Restaurant, slated for Sunday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m., has been a long time coming — 495 days to be exact.The restaurant was severely damaged in an electrical fire that ravaged the building on July 13, 2010.“That was the beginning of our nightmares,” said Maria Wright, one of the four Mirto siblings that own and operate the restaurant. “Not only do you lose part of your life, but you have to deal with insurance and the contractors and everything else.”Because of extensive smoke and water damage, the entire building had to be gutted, leaving only the shell of the original building as the basis for the slow and meticulous reconstruction process.“There’s been so much support from the community,” Vicenza Mirto-Jackson said.Mirto-Jackson and her siblings described how local business and area residents went out of their way to lend a hand, offering support and services to the Mirto family as they rebuilt their business.Nick Mirto described the townspeople as “accommodating.” Wright said, “As soon as I called them, they were right here to help us out.”The completion of the building renovations was stalled several times, forcing the family to post-pone the grand reopening of the restaurant started by their parents in 1983.Although the inside of the building looks very different from the original layout of the restaurant, the owners say the great service and menu favorites will remain the same. The main change to the menu is the addition of some classic Italian treats.The restaurant focuses on using locally grown ingredients to ensure the best taste and freshness.Appetizers generally range from $8 to $10; entrees go from $12 to $24. The homemade desserts and local ice creams are priced at $6 and $7.Pasta Night is held every Wednesday. Other dinner specials are offered on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.Once the warm weather returns, diners will be able to enjoy the beautiful vistas from the outdoor patio.The restaurant will open for its first day of normal business on Tuesday, Nov. 22.The hours of operation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. On Fridays and Saturdays it will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 4:30 to 10 p.m. On Sundays it will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. The restaurant will be closed on Mondays.Catering will be available on and off the premises.For more information or to make a reservation, call 518-398-7311.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield
