Winsted State Police
The following information was provided by the Connecticut State Police at Troop B. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Driver hits crashed truck
Jessica Valenta, 17, of Winsted was driving on Route 8 in Colebrook during a snowstorm Oct. 29. At about 2:45 p.m., the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox hit a 2006 Ford F150 pickup truck that had just been hit by a car that crossed into its lane. Driver James Stecewicz, 52, of Colebrook was taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital with neck pain. Valenta was charged with following too closely. The other driver, Robert Nelson, 61, of Datil, N.M., was charged with traveling too fast for conditions and failure to drive right.
Protective order violated
James Kucia, 50, of New Hartford was arrested Oct. 31 after a 6:37 p.m. report of a disturbance outside his Cottage Street residence, which he was banned from entering due to a protective order. The complainant was Laura Kucia, of that address. James Kucia was charged with violation of a protective order and disorderly conduct. Bond was set at $10,000. He was to appear in Waterbury Court Nov. 1.
Driver falls asleep
Lloyd Garrison, 80, of Norfolk was driving south on Route 272 in Norfolk Nov. 2. At about 5:37 p.m., just north of Estey Road, he fell asleep at the wheel. The 2008 Hyundai Veracruz drifted off the road. It came to rest between a tree and a utility pole. It sustained moderate scrapes to both sides. Garrison was not injured. He was given a verbal warning for failure to maintain the proper lane.
Failure to appear
Daniel Nyenhuis, 19, was arrested Nov. 3 after he was found to be unlawfully in a home on Goose Green Road in Barkhamsted. The victim was Steven Benson. Nyenhuis was charged with burglary, criminal attempt and interfering with a police officer. He was taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital with injuries. Bond was set at $2,000. A warrant for Nyenhuis was discovered. He was also charged with failure to appear. He was to appear in Bantam Superior Court Nov. 4.
