Irving John ‘Wings’ Wasley Jr.

SHARON — Irving John “Wings” Wasley Jr., loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away at home on Nov. 4, 2011, at the age of 83. He was the husband of Barbara (Morren) Wasley for 55 years.Born Sept. 10, 1928, in Bristol, Conn., he was the son of the late Helen (Perkins) and Irving John Wasley Sr. Mr. Wasley spent his childhood in Bristol, before moving to Warren in 1942, where he would go on to earn his Eagle Scout badge, of which he was very proud. He graduated from New Milford High School in 1948 and from the University of Connecticut in 1950 with an associate degree in agriculture. He was a self-employed landscape gardener and biodynamic farmer for more than 30 years. He spent his early career as an artificial breeder for 12 years, traveling to farms in northwest Connecticut. To learn more about horticulture, he spent two years working for the Hearn family in Washington, Conn., at the Morning Glory Flower Shop. Then he began his own business as a landscape gardener, with a corresponding interest in biodynamic farming.He was very active in the Wichita Grange in Warren, was a Warren volunteer fireman for 64 years and active in the Warren Congregational Church, where he served as treasurer for many years. Wings also had a keen interest in watching his grandsons’ sports events. He loved his family, and was happiest when he was with them. He also loved nature, working the soil, and was a fan of UConn basketball.In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by a son, Stephen Ross Wasley of Sharon; a daughter, Jane Wasley Dickinson and her husband, Robert, of Morris; and three grandsons, Collin, Paden and Chad Dickinson all of Morris.A funeral service will be held Friday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. at the Warren Congregational Church. Burial will follow in Warren Cemetery.
