NFL football is unpredictable

Last week’s record, 8-5; for the season, 77-39. Pick of the Week, 1-0; for the season, 7-1.

I had another mediocre week. Going 8-5 isn’t much to get excited about. My Pick of the Week came in — barely — but I never saw the Rams upset of the Saints coming. Every week there are always surprises, but that’s what makes the NFL so unpredictable and interesting.

This week there is an additional game, bringing the total number of games from 13 to 14. Here’s hoping we all have a good week.

Sunday, Nov. 6

Miami at Kansas City — The Dolphins continue in their quest for the top pick in the draft. The Chiefs are now atop their division and should easily prevail, 24-13.

Tampa Bay at New Orleans — The Bucs are coming off the bye week and should be ready to go. The Saints must rebound from their loss to the Rams, and they will, 34-24.

Atlanta at Indianapolis — It’s hard to imagine the Colts winning this game. I’ll stick with the Falcons, 27-13.

Cleveland at Houston — As I said last week, the Browns just don’t generate enough offense. The Texans are back on track, and I’ll make them my Pick of the Week, 28-16.

New York Jets at Buffalo — I know the Jets are coming off their bye week, but that doesn’t necessarily mean quarterback Mark Sanchez will be more consistent. The Bills are good and should win, 23-20.

Seattle at Dallas — Very simply put, this is a must-win for the Cowboys. I’ll stick with Dallas in this one, 24-10.

San Francisco at Washington — The defense will dominate this game, but in the end the 49ers will score enough to win,  20-17.

Cincinnati at Tennessee — The Bengals have surprised everyone, but I don’t see them winning two in a row on the road. I’ll take the Titans, 19-17.

Denver at Oakland — Denver quarterback Tim Tebow is a great person, but far from being a quality quarterback in the NFL. The Broncos will play tough, but the Raiders will prevail, 23-17.

New York Giants at New England — There’s a good chance the Giants will win this one, because I’m picking the Patriots. I like the Patriots big, 33-23.

St. Louis at Arizona — Neither team is going anywhere, but it still should be a good game. I’ll take the Cards at home, 21-17.

Green Bay at San Diego — As far as I’m concerned, nothing has changed. Until they lose, I’m sticking with the Packers. Green Bay wins this one, 30-21.

Baltimore at Pittsburgh — This is the game of the week. The Ravens put a hurt on my Steelers earlier in the year, but this game will show everyone just how much the Steelers have improved. Pittsburgh gets even in this game, 34-24.

Monday, Nov. 7

Chicago at Philadelphia — The Bears will be ready to go, but now that the Eagles have rediscovered their running game, I see them winning this one, 28-20.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
