A scary, spooky, chilly Halloween

MILLBROOK — Vampires, witches and ghosts flooded the Millbrook Fire Department’s parking lot to attend two fun-filled Halloween events on Saturday, Oct. 29.The town of Washington Recreation Committee hosted Trunk or Treating and a Halloween costume parade and show. Before the winter storm residents decorated their cars in the Halloween spirit and handed out candy to hordes of excited children. Trick or treaters went from car to car collecting candy, before going door-to-door, maximizing on the holiday to full advantage.“The Trunk of Treat event allows kids to grab candy for one hour in one location and parents don’t worry about the kid going around houses,” said Warren McMillan, recreation director. The attendees then went inside the firehouse and children were able to show off their costumes for prizes.By noon the annual Halloween costume parade began, from the firehouse down Front Street to Franklin Avenue up Church Street and down Washington Avenue to end at the firehouse once again. After the parade there was suppose to be a professional children’s show, but it was cancelled due to the winter storm. “For 30 years we have done the parade and show, and we have been doing the Trunk or Treat for about the last 10 years,” said McMillan. “It’s usually much more people, but the weather has probably discouraged a lot of them. However, it’s a great event, it puts a smile on your face and having fun with children is the biggest reward ever.”

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
