Alfred Sherwood Ongley

NORTH CANAAN — Alfred Sherwood Ongley, 83, of Railroad Street in North Canaan went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 28, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer.Al was born Feb. 8, 1928, at Sharon Hospital. He was the son of the late Irene (Parsons) and Alfred E. Ongley.Al served in the U.S. Navy as a cook in the landing craft infantry in World War II. He enjoyed bowling, gardening, fishing, birds and baking. He was a member of the Northwest Rod & Gun Club. Al was married to the love of his life, Nancy (Saunders) Ongley, on Sept. 26, 1953, in Granby, Conn. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his daughter, Joanne (Ongley) Fontanelli and her husband, Joe, of Halfmoon, N.Y.; his sons, John William and his wife, Heather, of Sharon and Stephen Paul of North Canaan; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Holly, Jessica, Marissa, Brianna, Fayth, Zachary, Mackenzie and Keira; and his great-grandchildren, Derrik, Shelby and Brent. Al was predeceased by his sons, Edward Alan and Robert David; his siblings, George P. Ongley, Patricia A. Ongley, Virginia M. Ongley and Sally (Ongley) Northrop. Calling hours will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a celebration of Al’s life at 11 a.m. at the Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon.A private burial service will be held at the Salisbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Salisbury Visiting Nurse Association.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
