Amenia man dies in accident on icy road
AMENIA — Amenia resident John P. Stefanopoulos, 22, was killed in a motor vehicle accident on icy roads just before midnight on Thursday, Oct. 27.Early reports from police investigators indicated that Stefanopoulos was traveling northbound on Route 22 in Amenia when he lost control of the vehicle, a 2007 BMW M-5, roughly 300 feet north of the intersection with Route 44.The vehicle apparently crossed over the center line and hit a tree on the west side of the road.Stefanopoulos was the only person in the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is continuing, but it has been determined that Stefanopoulos was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Alcohol is not suspected to be involved, but excessive speed is thought to be a contributing factor.Dutchess County Sheriff Deputy T.J. Hanlon said the full investigation, which uses equipment to map the scene to determine the cause of the accident, will not be complete for several months. The full report will include the estimated rate of speed of the car at the time of the accident.Emergency service workers reported that some members of the Stefanopoulos family went to the scene of the accident, but were escorted away by the police.Amenia Fire Chief Shawn Howard would not speculate on whether the weather was a contributing factor, but the region experienced a small but unseasonable snowstorm that evening. Some locations received as much as 3 inches of snow; temperatures dipped into the 20s.Firefighters at the scene of the accident said it was still snowing when they arrived, but that the roads did not appear icy.Stefanopoulos worked at the Four Brothers restaurant in Millerton. His father, Peter Stefanopoulos, is one of the founders, along with his brothers, of the Four Brothers restaurant chain and also owns Peter’s Boathouse restaurant in Lakeville.
