Marie Louise (Aakjar) Peterson

SHARON — Marie Louise (Aakjar) Peterson, 97, passed away Oct. 13, 2011, at Noble Horizons, the beloved widow of Melvin G. Peterson, who died in October 1983. Born Jan. 8, 1914, in Sharon, Marie was one of 10 children of the late Gertrude (Laursen) and Peder Aakjar, proud Danish emigrants. Marie was proud of her heritage and traveled to Denmark with her brother, Louie, to find the ancestral homestead, which is still in the Aakjar family today. She was also proud of her hometown, Sharon, and contributed her time to help her church, grange, numerous civic organizations and the fire department.Marie, a resident at Geer Village for nine years, lived at Noble Horizons since 2010. For more than 20 years, she and her husband owned and operated Sharon Mountain Kennels, which was greatly missed when she had to close it in 1983. Marie was an excellent seamstress who also enjoyed many hours of crafts and creating wedding cakes, especially for two of her granddaughters and many nieces and nephews.She is survived by her son, John Peterson and his wife, Ruby; her granddaughters Lynn Kent and her husband, David, and Lesa Tennant and her husband, Michael; her great-granddaughters, Laura and Jessica Rein, and her daughter, Jayne Larsen and her husband, Ronald; her grandson, Eric Larsen, and his wife, Nena; her granddaughter, Britt Rothauser and her husband, Greg; her twin great-granddaughters, Katherine “Kat” and Haley; and numerous nieces and nephews. Marie was predeceased by all of her brothers and sisters, George Aakjar, Carrie Johnson, Elizabeth Paul, Louis Aakjar, Amile Aakjar, Sophia Morehouse, Peder Aakjar, Laurena Kline and Elmer Aakjar. Donations may be made in Marie’s name to the Sharon Volunteer Fire Department or the Sharon American Legion. Interment was in Ellsworth Cemetery in Sharon. The Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon has charge of all arrangements.

Water main cleaning in North Canaan

A five-time Grammy winner, Cray has been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame and earned The Americana Music Awards Lifetime Achievement for Performance. He has played with blues and rock icons including Albert Collins, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Eric Clapton and many more.

Cabaret comes to St. Andrew's in Kent

Music in the Nave will again tap into local talent April 6 at 7 p.m. when its features George Potts in an intimate cabaret concert in the St. Andrew’s Church parish house.

Pott is a well-known figure in the community, both through his presence in the perennially popular Fife ‘n Drum, the restaurant started by his father-in-law, renowned pianist Dolph Trayman, and through his own career as a folk musician.
