Webutuck varsity soccer teams earn several wins

WEBUTUCK — Webutuck High School athletes have been busy kicking things into high gear on the soccer field recently. Both the boys and girls team have had some success during the past week of play.

Boys varsity soccer

On Thursday, Oct. 6, the Webutuck boys varsity soccer team played a home game against Millbrook, finishing with a 1-1 tie in overtime.

The day before, Wednesday, Oct. 5, the team faced Rhinebeck and pulled out a 1-0 win.

The Webutuck goal was made by Matt Matteo with an assist by Liam Corcoran with only eight minutes left in the game.

Rhinebeck was unable to answer with their own goal during the last intense minutes of the match.

“The game was incredibly well played,” said coach Tammy Nethercott.

Girls varsity soccer

The Webutuck girls varsity soccer team traveled to Rhinebeck on Wednesday, Oct. 5, and came away with their sixth win of the season, making their overall record 6-2-1.  The final score of the game was 4-1.

Making three of those goals, Victoria Cullinan scored a hat trick. Brooke Dahoney bagged the fourth goal, assisted by Briana Bailey.

The only Rhinebeck goal let into the net was off a penalty kick.

On Monday, Oct. 3, the team met Marlboro on Webutuck’s home turf and picked up a 2-0 win.

Danielle Stoetzner made the first goal of the game in the first 10 minutes, and Rileigh Campion scored the second goal at the beginning of the second half. Both goals were unassisted.

Goalkeeper Leslie Robertson made “some outstanding saves in goal,” said coach Mark Moren. This was Robertson’s fifth shutout of the year.

Moren also noted that Allison Flinn, Meagan McCoy and Cari Cestone played great.

“Brooke Dahoney and Victoria Cullinan had a fantastic game in the middle of the field, really controlling things and setting the offense up,” he added.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
