Helen D. Chrisman
NORTH CANAAN — Helen D. Chrisman, 95, beloved mother of Neil D. and Richard Chrisman, died peacefully Sept. 29, 2011, at her home in Geer Village. She was the widow of Neil M. Chrisman, whose career spanned more than 40 years as an executive in the agricultural and construction machinery business across Latin America and in Moline, Ill., with John Deere. Helen was born Nov. 19, 1915, in Chicago, Ill., and graduated from Wheaton College in 1936. She was a teacher (high school and Montessori), linguist, musician, pilot, rancher, horsewoman and ardent champion of women’s liberation. Her outgoing personality and no nonsense nature will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her two sons, Neil of New York City and Sheffield, Mass., and Richard, of Lee, Mass.; and three grandsons, Clayton, Taylor and Torrence. A memorial service will be held Friday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m. at Christ Church Episcopal and Trinity Lutheran Church in Sheffield, the Rev. Anne Ryder officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Helen’s memory to Geer Village, 77 South Canaan Road, North Canaan, CT 06018.The Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan has charge of arrangements.
