Connecticut State Police Troop B Police Blotter
The following information was provided by the Connecticut State Police at Troop B. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Barbara Schutz, no age given, of Sheffield was driving north on Furnace Hill Road in North Canaan Sept. 26. At about 4:10 p.m., she attempted to cross Route 44. Her 2001 Toyota Tundra hit the rear driver’s side quarter panel of a 1997 Ford Escort driven west on Route 44 by Olivia Smith, 18, of Winsted. There were no injuries. Schutz was given a written warning for failure to grant the right-of-way.
Motorcycle hits building
Gretchen Bartkus, 39, of Stratford, Conn., attempted to turn a motorcycle around on Railroad Street in Cornwall at about 1:53 p.m. on Sept. 26. She lost control of the 1996 Kawasaki. It hit a support column at the front of a building at 9 Railroad St. A chair and part of a window were also broken. The property is owned by Susan Kochman. There were no injuries. Bartkus was given a written warning for making an improper turn.
Breach of peace
Karie Brown, 23, of Millerton was arrested Sept. 28 following a disturbance on East Main Street in North Canaan. The complainant was Thomas Sherwood, 28, of Salisbury. Brown was charged with disorderly conduct and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond was set at $2,000. She was to appear in Bantam Superior Court Sept. 29.
Lucas Jordan, 23, of Salisbury was driving east on Route 4 in Sharon Sept. 29. At about 8:01 a.m., he lost control. The 1998 Honda Accord crossed into the westbound lane. It hit head-on a 1998 Buick LeSabre driven west by Robert Coombs, 55, of Torrington. Both cars had heavy front-end damage. Jordan was taken to Sharon Hospital. Coombs and passenger Brian Allen, 39, of Winsted were taken to Sharon Hospital with rib and knee injuries. A second, unidentified passenger was taken by ambulance to Hartford Hospital with more serious injuries. The accident remains under investigation.
Water blamed for accident
Daniel Clapps, 41, of Torrington was driving north on Route 63 in Falls Village Sept. 29. At about 11:10 p.m., .2 miles north of Route 126, he lost control in water on the road. A Department of Transportation warning sign had been posted. The 2009 Mazda 3 hit a guardrail. Damage was minor. Clapps was not injured. He was given a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.
William Gauthier, 18, no address given, was driving north on Route 7 in North Canaan Sept. 30. At about 5:48 p.m., the 1996 Toyota Corolla, registered to Linda Gibson of Ghent, N.Y., hit the rear of a 2003 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by Eric Vondwingelo, 16, of East Canaan. Vondwingelo had stopped to turn left onto Route 7A.
The truck had minor damage. The Toyota had severe front end damage.
There were no injuries to the drivers or passengers Amber Vondwingelo, 19, and Toby Vondwingelo, 2, of the same address. Gauthier was charged with following too closely, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Michael Thomas, 32, no address given, was driving east on Route 44 in Salisbury Oct. 2. At about 9:21 a.m. he lost control. The 2002 Ford Taurus veered right. It hit a guardrail. It continued over an embankment and rolled over.
There were no injuries to the driver or passengers Tyler Parrotte, 11, and Thomas Evan, 10, both of Millerton. Thomas was charged with traveling too fast for conditions.
Two people were arrested at their North Elm Street home in North Canaan Oct. 2 after police were called at 11:13 p.m. for a domestic disturbance. Anne Morgan, 19, and Rose Whitford, 41, were each charged with disorderly conduct. Bond was set at $500 each. They were to appear in Bantam Superior Court Oct. 3.
Assault and disorderly
James Kucia, 50, of New Hartford was arrested Oct. 2 after an investigation into a disturbance at his Cottage Street home. The complainant is Laura Kucia, 45, of the same address. James Kucia was charged with disorderly conduct and assault. He was taken to Sharon Hospital for an unrelated complaint. Bond was set at $2,500. He was to appear in Bantam Superior court Oct. 3.
Mary Morey, 19, of North Canaan was arrested on a warrant Oct. 3. She was charged with larceny, forgery and conspiracy to commit larceny. Bond was set at $1,500. She is to appear in Bantam Superior Court Oct. 17.
