75 years ago — September 1936

Reflections of the Season (editorial): A couple of daring aviators and a beautiful English lady have crossed the Atlantic in non-stop flights — so what.

SALISBURY — Miss Mildred Coons has resumed her duties at the Salisbury Pharmacy after her illness.

LAKEVILLE — Sneak thieves smashed one of the plate glass windows at the Lakeville Wine Store last Friday night or early Saturday morning. A few bottles of liquor were taken but the thieves were evidently frightened away before accomplishing much.

William Stanton has moved from Salisbury into part of the Garrity place.

LAKEVILLE — Van B. Griggs recently returned from a summer spent in Europe. He was a member of the Yale Glee Club, which gave concerts in England, France, Germany and Belgium.

50 years ago — September 1961

LAKEVILLE — John W. Clark, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Wolfe Clark, has been assigned to F Company of the 3rd Training Regiment of the U.S. Army Training Center, Infantry, at Fort Dix, N.J., for eight weeks of basic training. “Pepper” is a graduate of Housatonic Valley Regional High School and Perdue University.

SHARON — Larkin’s Package Store, a new enterprise in town, owned and operated by Dan and Dot Larkin, will open the latter part of this week. It is located on Gay Street, the Lakeville Road. This new, modern store with convenient parking area, is well equipped with all name brands of wines, liquors and beer. The Larkins are well known in town, as Mr. Larkin is engaged as an electrical contractor for this vicinity.

KENT — Mrs. Albert R. Edwards is now in Bartow visiting her son and his family for a few weeks.

CORNWALL — Mrs. John R. Kling is confined to her home with a fractured arm, received when she slipped while walking on Todd Road.

25 years ago — September 1986

CORNWALL — John Miller received an Emmy, television’s highest award, at ceremonies recently in Pasadena, Calif. He won the Emmy in the category of outstanding writing of an informational program for A Spencer Tracy Legacy: A Tribute by Katharine Hepburn, which aired March 10 on PBS. Miller, who writes for the Today Show, has been a weekend resident in town for the last 25 years.

Robert J. Pallone

NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins St. passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

Bob was born Feb. 5, 1955 in Torrington, the son of the late Joesph and Elizabeth Pallone.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
