Young riders shine at Lakeville Pony Club Open

LAKEVILLE — The date said it was summer. The weather said early fall. The 54th annual Lakeville Open Horse Show took place on Sunday, Sept. 18, on a day that was bright, crisp and clear. The horse show, organized by and run as a benefit for the Lakeville Pony Club, was swarming with cute children and adorable ponies.But it was also a serious competition, offering $1,500 in prize money.The Lakeville Pony Club has 25 members ranging in age from 8 to 19. Fourteen of the members competed in Sunday’s show. Diana Lafer, secretary of the club, said at this moment in time it is all girls, but boys are welcome to join. Her two daughters, ages 12 and 8, both competed. “It was a really nice day, the horses were well-behaved, and the kids had fun,” she said. The show is a true family affair, with all the parents of all the Pony Club members helping out.Prize money was awarded in seven divisions with first-place winners receiving $100. First-place winners were:• Evergreen division: Diana Hurley riding Summer Rain • Open working hunter: Jennifer Rossire of Lakeville, riding David Hopper’s horse, West Life• Children’s hunter: Lizzie Chamberlin of Amenia, riding Rico• Pony hunter: Meg Boyer on Dexter• Green working hunter: Lily Williams of New Canaan on Name of the Game • Open jumper: Jennifer Rossire on Higgins• Adult hunter: Sarah Williams with Leo Rainman
