NORTH CANAAN — Who doesn’t love a truck? List in that category all sorts of work vehicles including fire engines, tractors, wreckers, excavators, ambulances and military vehicles — more than 30 different big rigs in all — and you have the makings of a fun fundraiser.Lone Oak Campsites is sponsoring a Touch-a-Truck fundraiser at the campground on Route 44 in East Canaan on Aug. 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.Admission is by donation. Proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the North Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Canaan Fire Company. The campground community has long supported Make-A-Wish, but this is the first Touch-a-Truck event. There will be food, and activities for youngsters that include a game that involves dousing a fire.A horn-free hour, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., is a chance for very small children and others sensitive to noise to enjoy themselves. The main idea here is to give everyone a chance to sit behind the wheel of vehicles that can only be described as awesome. Professional operators will be on hand to offer tours and answer questions.A few more that might be glimpsed that day: an old military Jeep, a cherry picker, a police car, street sweeper and hydroseeder. The annual giant tag sale fundraiser will be held at the same time.
